History
The Department of Kinesiology and the Department of Community Health merged in 2005 to become the Department of Kinesiology
and Community Health. Department Head Wojtek Chodzko-Zajko said about the merger, "It's an exciting opportunity for both programs
to grow." Mergers and name changes are nothing new. In 1895 the Department of Physical Training for Men and Department of
Physical Training for Women were established and remained separate until 1972 when they merged. In 1987 the Department of
Physical Education was renamed the Department of Kinesiology. Years later, in 1992, the Department of Health and Safety
Studies was renamed Department of Community Health. Change is an ongoing tradition that ultimately reflects what is best
for the students. Speaking about the combined Department of Kinesiology and Community Health, Chodzko-Zajko said, "This is a
really exciting opportunity to pull together faculty with a common interest. It provides more opportunities for students within
the curriculum."
